Mason Jar Garden

I hate to be the most sentimental, mushy, gooey mommy by writing this post- but in case you didn’t know this about me, I am made up of a healthy dose of mushy. And I am not talking about my rear end, (at least I hope not!)

IMG_3718

I am talking about my little tiny baby girl Pia that is not so little and tiny all of the sudden.

IMG_6129

In the blink of an eye Pia is a real little girl. And she has just recently taken to picking flowers (as I think all little girls do).

IMG_6002

She is big on “nature walks” which my own mother used to take us kids on all of the time. She looooooves to pick flowers to commemorate each walk she takes. So if Henry (in case you don’t know this, that is my dog, not my husband) has to have a poop walk, she will pick a collection of flowers to remind her of that walk. Do you find that funny?! Or is it just me?

IMG_6440

Then she finds all of the abandoned mason jars, holiday cups, etc. places each walks flowers in the “vase” and lines them up on the window sill in the kitchen. We rotate them out as the flowers rot.

IMG_6435

She takes her “display” very seriously.

IMG_6443

And yes, we do try to keep her out of peoples yards when she is gathering her blooms. If anyone’s garden has suffered, it has been my own!

IMG_6439

One last anecdote. When I was a kid, my mother had an unbelievable lilac garden. Like 6 trees that seemed to bloom and bloom. My neighbor Lia and I would climb up and butcher those poor lilacs.

I would take all of my moms mason jars and fill them with water and then stuff those limp lilacs into the jar. We would then spend the day shaking those mason jars until our arms would be ready to fall off.

IMG_6437

We were making lilac perfume.

Then we would set up a stand and sell it. Budding Entrepreneurs.

IMG_6438

If you live in Seattle, look for a Mason jar garden stand near you this summer. I can see it brewing in her little mind.
