A couple weeks ago when I took the girls to look at dogs outside the city my sister-in-law Natalie was super generous and came along for the day to help me wrangle the girls. And let me tell you- they can be a lot to wrangle these days.
On our way back to the city, we rolled through Bainbridge Island and went to The Nola Café. The Nola Café is pretty renouned ever since Giada de Laurentis went there on her old travel show and mowed down the Caramel French Toast. Well that vision of the caramel French toast really stuck with me and when I was a few weeks from my due date with Coco (so like 4 years ago) I made Pete and Pia go to the café. Which meant a drive, a ferry ride and another drive. I clearly had really severe cravings.
But it was so worth it. I still remember eating the French toast plus the linguini with clams and a Cesar salad. Oink, oink.
So this time I toned it down a bit. Since I was driving I didn’t indulge in a Sunday afternoon cocktail, but I did weirdly stalk the table next to us where someone was drinking a spicy watermelon drink. With booze. And siracha. Natalie and I became obsessed with it and when we got home Natalie was sure that she could make an equally crazy and delicious drink.
So this “Thirsty Thursday” Spicy Watermelon Bomb is courtesy of Natalie and is a wild and fun drink that is complex with sweet and spicy and sour notes. Enjoy!
Recipe: Spicy Watermelon Bomb
- 2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 2 ounces vodka
- dash siracha
- ½ cup fresh watermelon chunks
- 2 strawberries, diced
- Watermelon balls for garnish
- In a large glass add the lemon juice, vodka, strawberries and watermelon chunks. Muddle them until the fruit is like a pulp. Strain the contents into a chilled glass filled with ice.
- Add the siracha and stir to combine and then top the glass with watermelon balls for garnish.
