The truth is, I have had a bitter-sweet week. We had some vicious food poisoning last weekend (bitter!) But recovered in time for a lovely Easter with the girls (sweet!) I am finishing up tons and tons of prep for a super fun IRS audit that goes back years and years (bitter!!). And then I got a new car Monday (sweet!) and yesterday Coco and I got rear ended on the freeway going fast (bitter!) and the other guy was hurt and his car was totaled (bitter!) But Coco and I are fine minus some sore muscles and turns out the new car is a super safe tank (sweet!) and my book arrived in the mail (super sweet!!) With all the ups and downs, I will be honest- I really wanted a good stiff drink this evening.
My husband drinks scotch and bourbon and whiskey neat, or “brown juice” as we call it around here. I always think that in my mind I would like to be able to just pour a little glass sometimes and enjoy it like he does, but usually it is just too dang strong for me and I look like a cartoon going “aaaaeeeehhhhhhhhh!! Wooooooooo!!”
With big watery eyes and my mouth in an O.
But this is cut just enough with a ginger simple syrup and fresh squeezed blood orange juice (courtesy of my sister-in-law Natalie who knows a thing or two about making a bourbon drink!) so that it is strong, but delicious.
If you are having guests any time soon, (or just had a really long week like me!) take advantage of the gorgeous blood oranges that are in the market RIGHT NOW!!! And make a beautiful Blood Orange Bourbon Smash. Your weekend will thank you for it.

I am in so.much.love. Boubon is my favorite booze and ginger is my favorite flavor to go with it. And those gorgeeeoooouuusss blood oranges? I die. I need this drink in my life, like yesterday.
You definitely deserve that drink after a week like that, heck you deserve two! I love “brown juice” 🙂
lol!! I love that you said brown juice!
What a crazy week! Food poisoning is the WORST.
The flavors in this drink sound amazing. I love cocktails that are fruity and not too sweet, and this sounds like my idea of brown juice heaven! Mmm, ginger.
