This should be called Crazy Bread. Cause it is so crazy good. Craaaaaazy good.
Who knew that canned biscuit dough could get this good?
I love traditional monkey bread, but I had to put a twist on it with savory flavors. I made this in the fall for some friends, and they have been asking ever since for me to do a blog post so that they could have the recipe. Here you go guys!
Soft, I mean really soft, buttery rolls smothered in cheddar cheese and onions baked into a lovely bread.
I thought that this would be awesome to dunk in all the chili that everyone is probably making for the Super Bowl this weekend.
Just set this bread out and watch people flock and devour!
Cheese and Onion Monkey Bread, serves 10
-2 large cans of biscuit dough
-1 Tbs of butter
-1 yellow onion, peeled and thinly sliced
-1 Tbs of fresh thyme
-2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
-1 cup butter
1) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prepare an angel food cake pan with a removable bottom and set it on top of a rimmed sheet pan.
2) In a large pan, add 1 Tbs of butter and the thinly sliced onion. Sprinkle with salt and cook over medium heat until the onion slices begin to brown, about 5 minutes.
3) Add 2 cups of water and a few sprigs of fresh thyme andlet the onions simmer in the water, (which should have picked up the browned bits from the pan) until the onions are soft and juicy- about another 5 minutes. Set aside.
4) Cut each biscuit into quarters.
5) Meanwhile melt the 1 cup of butter in a small sauce pan.
6) Brush the inside of the pan lightly with the melted butter, then begin to add about 1/3 of the dough balls.
7) On top of the dough balls, sprinkle a third of the onions and cheese.
8) Repeat with remaining dough balls and onions and cheese. When everything is in the pan, pour the butter evenly over the entire pan.
9) Bake the monkey bread in the oven for about 45 minutes, and then remove from the oven and let it sit for another 10-15, or until cool enough to handle.
10) Turn out upside down onto a serving platter and pull apart to experience pure, buttery, cheesy heaven!

This looks soooo good! Not sure if I can wait till Sunday to make this 😉
oh.my.gosh. this sounds so amazing, and i’m all for using the biscuit dough!
right?! The dough makes it SO easy!
Um, I would completely devour this bread!
I know- I had to ask someone to remove the bread from my line of reach. I had butter dribbles on my chin.
Wow, this bread looks amazing!
How in the world do you think these delicious things up?!
What is biscuit dough in cans? Would home made bread dough work? i don’t think I’ve seen biscuit dough over here in Scotland.
Hi Iris! Of course homemade bread dough would be incredible! For us lazies, biscuit dough in can would be like pillsbury!
Good grief! This looks unbelievably good.
Oh, no, Heather. The force is strong with this recipe. I won’t be able to resist…
LOL! that is hilarious Kelley!
Who knew Monkey bread could be so succulent?! Wow, does that look tasty. BTW its Feb 1st … Got Cuban Roast? 😉
I’m kinda glad I don’t have a pan big enough to make this. I wouldn’t be able to resist!
My mouth is watering. This looks soooo good. I have always loved sweet monkey bread but this is right up my alley!
The caramelized onions on this….truly genius!
Oh my, oh my!! If I make this for my BF, he may just propose to me on the spot!
Awesome!!!! By all means Allison!!
Esi, you could probably cook this in any pan, really…make half a batch and put in a loaf pan or a 9×9? Dunno, play with it…
Heather, I am seriously curious about this! I don’t normally like savory over sweet, but oh yum. I bet the biscuits and onions still bring a little sweetness against the salty butters and cheeses. It really sounds incredible! I’m excited to try this. I wish I had seen it before Super Bowl weekend!
That’s what I get for skipping your blog post for the day…
Made this and it was so easy and delicious. My 20 yr. old son loved it. I did only use half the amount of butter and it still turned out good. Thanks for the great recipe!
I’ve made this years Ago when pampered chef offered this recipe or similar. I added bacon and I put all of my pieces of biscuits in butter and then layered it in a bundt pan. Haven’t made it in a few years but decided it would be good for New Years brunch. Wasn’t disappointed. W!as a good offering.
Happy New Year Connie- that makes me really happy, glad you enjoyed the recipe!
My onions got mushy simmering in 2 cups of water and it took waaay more than 5 minutes, so I am wondering if it might be a half cup of water instead of 2 cups?
I am adding sautéed garlic and using green onions for mine and serving it with Lasagne
Hello, I have a question about this recipe, what happens to all the water with the onions in it. Do you pour it out or does it evaporate? The pictures are great , but I see not water in the onions when it is time to use them.
Thank you, pam.deschner@gmail.com
Hello again I have another question, I have never made monkey bread, do I use premade bun dough or use biscuit dough ( ie: Pillsbury biscuits). I am so looking forward to making these for a group party. Thank you for your help.
I used biscuit dough 🙂
it evaporates out Pam!
please step by step tell me how to print your recipe! I’m not technical. Thank you.
Which canned biscuits are best, the regular size or the Pillsbury Grands which are a larger biscuit?
I think either would work!
