I was worried that you had gone a whole week without something insanely indulgent and deliciously sweet.
Like the kind of thing where you have butter dribbling down your chin and you don’t even care because it tastes so, SO good.
Well, don’t you worry. I am here to save you from a butter free weekend. Me and my monkey bread thing I have going on.
First it was savory, and now we are dealing with German Chocolate Monkey Bread. Yes. You heard me right.
Chocolate, coconut and pecans. Baked into buttery biscuits.
It is so good- you can’t even believe it!
Passing it off as breakfast may be going a little too far, but who am I to judge? I will probably cave to that idea at some point.
This could certainly be served as a late afternoon “snack” or just for straight up dessert. Whatever floats your boat…
German Chocolate Monkey Bread, serves 8
2 large cans of biscuit dough
½ cup sugar
½ cup finely shredded unsweetened coconut
2 tsp cinnamon
1 ½ cups pecans, toasted and chopped
2 cups finely shredded unsweetened coconut
2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prepare an angel food cake pan with a removable bottom and set it on top of a rimmed sheet pan.
Cut each biscuit into quarters.
In a medium bowl, combine the sugar, coconut and cinnamon, mix well.
Add the dough a few pieces a time and coat them well with the mixture.
Meanwhile melt the 1 cup of butter in a small sauce pan.
Brush the inside of the pan lightly with the melted butter, then begin to add about 1/3 of the dough balls.
On top of the dough balls, sprinkle a third of the pecans, coconut and chocolate chips.
Repeat with remaining dough balls and nuts, chocolate and coconut.
When everything is in the pan, return the melted butter to the stovetop and add the 1 cup of brown sugar.
Cook on low until the sugar melts into the butter.
Pour the sugar and butter mixture evenly over the entire pan.
Bake the monkey bread in the oven for about 45 minutes, and then remove from the oven and let it sit for another 10-15, or until cool enough to handle.
Turn out upside down onto a serving platter and pull apart to experience pure, buttery heaven!

It’s Pillsbury biscuit dough in the can in the fridge section. Of course, you could definitely make this from scratch, I was just being lazy 🙂
My hubby loves monkey bread and just made some this morning…wait til I make this one for him…he is in for a Biiiiigggg treat! Eye-candy for breakfast and coffee is a good way to start the day 🙂
I seriously need your nail polish!
Oh good!! Shellac or gel (can’t remember?) in the color “tiger blossom” but I also use OPI “red my fortune cookie”
Holy mackerel! My father would freak out if I made this for him!
Heather, your monkey bread obsession is getting seriously out of hand. This looks so awesome!
I know. It has officially become inapropriate.
I’m thinking toasted coconut and maybe browned butter….
I like things caramelized!

This looks oozy, gooey, delish!
Oh my oh my oh my. All you had to say was “monkey bread” and “chocolate”…here I come running!
i totally think we can get away with calling this breakfast.
This looks decadent and delicious! Pecans are such a nice addition. I love a good crunch!
I mad this for a small informal dinner party last night. Everyone loved it! I brought the leftovers in to share with co-workers this morning and they all loved it as well. I can’t stop eating it.
great Jen!! So glad that it won’t over so well!!
oh my. i just got a bundt pan. i need to make this!
Made this last night for my cousin’s birthday. Her favorite cake is German chocolate. This was her first ever monkey bread . She loved it. Thanks for posting th e recipe.
Heather, I want to take this to a breakfast tomorrow morning. Could I put it together tonight and then bake it off in the morning? Or would it get too soggy?
sorry! just saw this! I would think it would be fine- but let me know what you did!
Does it have to be a removeable bottom angel food cake pan or would a regular bundt pan work? Too sticky to release?
I just always do- but I bet that you could since there is so much butter!
Thanks, Heather. My friend loves German Chocolate Cake and I thought this would be a nice Christmas gift to give instead. I’ll let you know if I use the regular bundt pan and have success.
I plan to make this monkey bread with made-from-scratch biscuit dough. My question is: Will the cooking time change with the heavier density of the dough?
Also if someone has prepared this the night before and baked it in the morning, I would love to know how it turned out.
Oh Debbie- I have no idea bout the scratch dough and the baking time, but my instinct is that it will not be different. Just make sure you bake it low in the oven and keep an eye on it 🙂
I’m not a huge fan of coconut. Could you recommend any substitutions? Would oatmeal work? Would it work without coconut? Thank you!
Colleen-Just omit the coconut!
