First of all, I would like to note that I just made it through my first “”tornado.” Well, I don’t think it was actually all the way in the city, but everyone scared me to death with all this “Tornado in Chicago” business! For a girl from Seattle who’s only form of dramatic weather is extreme gray or maybe a few inches of snow every couple years- this was SCARY. So we may not have had the full fledged tornado, but there was crazy thunder, lightening and rain during my dinner last night. However, far more disturbing was the few hours of , uh “sleep” I had from 11-4Am in which I was on the 40th floor of a hotel near the lake. The creaking and groaning of the walls and the screaming of the wind combined with the strobe light show of lightening was enough to drive me like a little kid under the covers all night. I know. I’m so dramatic. Which is why I will now awkwardly transition into this cheerful cocktail!
This Thirsty Thursday is in honor of Fathers Day!!
My hubby loves bourbon and this is what I making for everyone this Sunday.
Despite the fact that this is for my man, this is definitely a “lightened up” summer bourbon cocktail. The ginger and bright lemon juice and the club soda cut the strong, rich bourbon and make the whole thing delicious, fizzy and sooooo easy to drink!
I am on my way to Minneapolis as this recipe posts- and it will be my very first time in the lovely city. My brother and sister in law used to live there and I have heard such great things about it!
I am doing a spot on KARE11news @4 today, and will follow that with a Demo cooking class at Byerly’s from 6-7:30.
You can also catch me on KARE-TV “Sunrise” on Friday around 6:20, and at Cooks of Crocus Hill (In Stillwater!) on Friday evening from 5-6 where I will be chatting and signing books- hope to see you there!!

This sounds so refreshing and summery! Fun!
yes, that weather that rolled through Chicago and then onto us over here in DC was SCARY!!! holy crap. It partially missed us but we were driving when it hit so it was really scary to not be able to see ANYTHING! Glad you’re safe! Now let’s raise our glasses to being safe! xo
Yes!! it was totally scary! thank you Julie
I’m totally down with this cocktail. Bourbon lover!
I’ll take one please 🙂 and then another. and another!
Looks amazing!
Yum! I think my hubby would like this too!
I am so making this. Love the dark alcohol too, bourbon, whisky, scotch. My favorite ginger beer is Bundaberg. Have you guys tried it? So good…you can get it at Total Wine and Spirits and Cost Plus. Moving home soon…just in case you ever need a bourbon guinea pig. 🙂 The bourbon root beer floats were a huge hit! Thanks.
I love anything with a lemon in it. The gin is the bonus!
This is really good, I substituted the club soda for sprite and Maker’s Mark for Jim Beam but it still turned out r3
really well.
I just made this with Basil Hayden. Wonderful cocktail. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Jim!
