We threw a little dinner party last weekend. When I say little, I mean 24 people.
Some horrible article came out 10 days ago about how Seattleites had witnessed a mere 78 minutes of weather over 70 degrees. I feel a tad guilty about complaining since I know some of you are hot enough to fry an egg on your forehead- but- please, have some pity for us sun deprived too.
Well that article massively inspired me to gather friends and celebrate the small window of sun we were due for (it was a glorious 73 degrees that day!) We ate outside and enjoyed my summer (city) garden.
It was some work to feed 24 people. But I promise you- if you are organized, it is totally doable. And I even had time to “over-serve” myself wine. But don’t worry- the kids were at my parents, so I only embaressed myself and my husband- (the children were spared.)
My favorite part of all this stuff is decking the table out. I absolutely LOVE giving my guests a full experience.
I thought I would share the menu and the pictures with you. Maybe they will give you some ideas for your own summer entertaining? By the way, I took some of these tips and shared them over at New Day Northwest a few days later- check out this little video ☺

I promise that all of this stuff is easy and homegrown. I spray painted those old lanterns in my driveway. The neighbors saw me sweating out there all afternoon like a crazy hag trapped in a filtered mask. I also spray painted the vases and the chargers (chargers were toxin free). I like to get a little crafty now and then.
I only used “filler” flowers like yarrow, billy’s balls (my favorite!) and little yellow mums (victor’s mums?). They are inexpensive and the yarrow is literally growing in droves next to the freeway. When those types of flowers are used in huge quantities they feel very luxurious.
I then mounded the tables full of anything yellow I could find at the farmers market and my local grocery store: Yellow tomatoes, on the vine and heirloom, golden cherry tomatoes, yellow summer squash, gold and yellow chilies and peppers, yellow apricots (called angelcots) and golden raspberries. Most of the golden raspberries were polished off by the guests, but everything else was cooked up: recipes are coming up!
Don’t forget the bar. I like a signature drink (a peach dandy in this case) and lots of bar snacks. Because I personally like to snack while I drink, so I assume everyone else does too… (I also filled the fountain with ice so I could leave all the bottled water in there)

Wow, that is one gorgeous outdoor area you’ve got there! What a view! I’m definitely envious of the Seattle weather…here in DC we had a heat index of 121 degrees a couple weeks ago!
Looking forward to the recipes!
Thanks Maggie- I planted every seed of that garden myself out there. It may not be a big garden, but I love it so much. However I long for some grass. But I won’t get picky….
Beautiful! You do great work! After seeing your view, I realized that I live just a few blocks from you. Small world!
Funny! Maybe I will see you round the hill!
Just beautiful! Thank you for sharing and yes I do get lots of ideas from you, you are so talented and you make it easy for some of us simpletons. thank you!
Christine- Thanks so much. Simpleton I doubt! But I do try to make it simple- I want everyone to enjoy the fun of putting together beautiful parties and food!
Beautiful spread – and although a lot of prep and planning time I’m sure it was worth it – love all that yellow in your center piece.
A great party always feels worth the prep!
Very impressive! Would love to hear about your prep schedule and any help you had to make that yummy menu a reality.
Really magnificent!!! Sometime can you do a timeline on how you manage to pull this together? Your garden is spectacular. How on earth do you do all this?
Gorgeous!! I love the table decor and your menu suggestions.
What a BEAUTIFUL and perfect party!!! I love your taste and style and view!!!
Wow, absolutely gorgeous. I love love love all the yellow. It’s my favorite color because it’s a”happy” color. I hope you were able to relax and enjoy your own party after all the deco’s and food prep.
Girl you know how to throw a party! Gorgeous. Glad you were able to enjoy that beautiful weather!
Love dinner parties and this one is over the top amazing. Beautiful settings and lovely gardens Heather!
thanks Mike!
Oh my goodness Heather, you are amazing! Some day I wanna grow up and be just like you. Bravo!
lol! Krista- thanks 🙂
Absolutely elegant and so inviting.
I know your friends were in awe and your darling husband was so proud of you.
Saw the great lanterns when I was driving up the hill the other day. So pretty. Where did you find the zucchini blossoms, or were they from your garden?
Those lanterns are on their third life as a new color! Zucchini blossoms are still hard to get here because of the cold weather, but your best bet is the neighborhood farmers markets, or Pike Place on Saturdays when they are the most well stocked!
I so want to go to one of your dinner parties.
Oh my goodness – what a beautiful setting for a great event. Celebrating sun is a good good thing 🙂
wow this looks incredible! I’ve always wanted to do this and now ill have a good reference!
Can I come to the next party??? I’m just in Ohio~I’d be happy to fly there!! Incredible! Love the garden, the fountain with ice, the table, the menu~all of it! Lucky guests
Hi! I came across your blog and noticed this awesome tablescape, so I just had to stop and check it out! I love your square white dishes and the vintage “hob nail” glasses. Where did you get these dishes and glasses?
Thanks Katie!
White square dishware is from Macy’s and called cellarware.
The hob nail glasses are anthropologie $10 each.
What is your recipe for your peach dandy. I have looked everywhere and cannot find it.
Thank you in advance.
Just saw you kick but on chopped and I had to find your blog…..so here I am 🙂 can’t wait to start trying out some of your recipes. First on the list is definitely the salted watermelon marg. Thanks for being a cookspiration for us girls.
The menu and setting are fantastic and Imalways love your table settings. Could you tell me about the drink pitchers with spouts in two different sizes on the appetizer/bar? They are beautiful and interesting, could you share where you bought them and what you use them for? (Beverage…I know! But for this presentation). Thank you so much! Nan Danielson
Hi Nan, thank you! Those are antique silver martini shakers. My husband collects them, and those two my mother found for him at different antique stores!
