I just feel like this is so appropriate for Halloween. Eating it makes me feel like some kind of crazy evil foodie witch stirring a steaming cauldron and stoking a scary fire.
Sorry. I’m not really sure what I’m talking about. I just get really excited about Holidays- and Halloween is one of my very favorite.
These black lentils are so beautiful and cooked with a little butter and shallot, they are the perfect accompaniment to these spicy, buttery wicked shrimp.
I am not saying that this is the most colorful dish, but that was sort of the point. I wanted it to look delicious but spooky! A bowl full of something dark and mysterious (uh, yet still edible and yummy and kind of beautiful in its own way?!)
I will just be quiet now. These Black lentils with wicked shrimp would be a perfect meal for Halloween. Here are some other fun self-proclaimed “Halloween Recipes” for last minute festivities or class parties:

Here is how you make these Black Lentils and Wicked Shrimp:
Rinse the lentils really well and set aside.
In a small pot, melt the butter over medium heat and add the shallots. Cook the shallots until they are golden brown, 5-7 minutes. Add the lentils and stir with the shallot to combine. Add the broth and stir. Reduce heat to low and put a lid on the pot. Simmer the lentils for about 15 minutes, and then let the pot sit for another 15 covered, with the heat off.
When they are finished they will be tender and not dry or gummy.
While the lentils are sitting, work on the shrimp.
In a small bowl, combine the oil and spices. Roll the shrimp in the spice marinade and let sit a few minutes.
Heat a pan over high heat and then add the shrimp (which are coated in the spice mixture. )
Cook until the outside is seared and crispy, about 1 minute each side, then flip. The shrimp should be somewhat “blackened” with the spice mixture on the outside, and just cooked through on the center.
Add the tablespoon of butter and remove the pan from the heat. Swirl the butter to pick up the remnants of the spice mixture in the pan.
Add the shrimp and the butter to the top of the lentils. Serve hot.

This recipe really sounds delicious
Thank You Bobbie
I want to make this dish, but there is no mention of how MANY lentils? What proportion do you use with the 1 1/2 cups of broth?
Hi Dorian, the recipe states 1 cup of lentils!
Ayyyoooo gonna make this this week! I bought some black beluga lentils and I have been REALLY enjoying them with Faroe island salmon on the grill, I did spiced black lentils with Greek yogurt, mint and EVOO, I did them with poached eggs and I also added them to my cilantro lime shrimp bowl. I have a LITTLE more dried lentils left and love shrimp so this sounds perfecto. Thanks for the idea, Heather!!!!
