Saturday Stuff, edition 26
-Hi Guys! Lets start with the good. Something so excited has been happening behind the scenes and now that it is out in the universe, I can finally share it with you!!! Way back when I was doing all of that elusive “traveling” last Spring and early summer, I was actually doing stuff. There was filming CTK and there was also the prep for THIS!
Myself and a couple of dear friends are in the September issue of BETTER HOMES AND GARDEN MAGAZINE!!!!
And even more exciting still, (as if that were possible) is that I have been named a 2015 STYLEMAKER for BHG!
OMG. OMG. OMG!!!
It is such a big deal to me and I am so excited to let you know. I wrote a whole blog post about it for the BHG blog Dish Delish and I will share the link when it is out so you can see my take on what happened behind the scenes. In the mean time, if you grab the magazine, all of the appetizer recipes in the photo spread are mine.
-In less awesome news: If you didn’t see this the other day- here is how my week has gone. On Monday, a knife fell off the counter and directly into the base of my big toe. (I WAS wearing shoes- Nike’s to be precise.) I damaged one tendon and severed the other. I had surgery to repair the tendons and close the puncture wound which was very deep. I have been through some painful things in my life, but I have to admit- this was up there. I think it is just the nature of it being the foot? It is such a nerve center. Plus there is just like NO padding! My goodness, it has been a hard week.
I have a few weeks where there is NO weight at all on my left foot, so I am on crutches. I think as I am tapering off the pain pills my claustrophobia is setting in just for being so immobile. I am going to have Pete go get me one of those scooter things this weekend so that I can kind of get back to doing some normal stuff.
I have no real idea what I am looking at for recovery yet, but it’s not great. I think I am kind of in denial about the whole thing happening to be honest. I try to look at every situation, good or bad and find the lesson in it. So far I haven’t gotten further than “always wear your kitchen clogs.” But I am hopeful that there was a greater reason for all of this happening at this moment, because it has been difficult.
-My parents took off for a weekend get-away to the beach, and since I am not even capable of looking after the children, my sweet mother-in-law came and got the children for a Friday at the beach plus an overnight. I am totally looking forward to just only worrying about myself and the dog and watching a movie with Pete and then crashing without worrying about the whole bed time routine. But deep down, I wish I was at the beach too. Actually I just wish I could walk. But Anyways…
-With all of this time on my hands and all of the pain killers in my system I blogged less this week (sorry!) but I have been having oh so much fun on pinterest! My favorite boards right now are my inspiration board and then it’s a toss up between breakfast and salads. Please let me know who your favorites are to follow on pinterest or share a link to your favorite board.
OK, Here are my favorite links from around the web this week:
Peanut Butter and Jelly Ice Cream Sandwiches- Gluten Free. I am so inspired. I am going to make these GF and Vegan ASAP. Can’t wait.
Most of the time I am totally at peace with my food allergies. And then I see Pretzel Cinnamini Rolls.
Also there are these Blueberry Pie Donuts. I could just die.
Um. What’s wrong with me!?? I can’t get enough sugar right now! These Millionaires Chex Bars are just drool worthy.
Caramelized Pork Tacos need to be in my life and in my tummy. Now.
You know I can’t get enough of those zucchini noodles. Check out pretty these Grilled Flank Steak with Zucchini Noodles are.

Thank you Bri- and PLEASE wear shoes!!lol!
Ouch, Heather. Do you meditate? If so, this may be a good time for that. If not, maybe this would be a good time to learn and begin. Anyway, wow! Heal well and soon!
I’m heading out to buy BHG today! Congrats!
OMG Nancy- I just bought a book on how to meditate!! (amazon- it will be here in two days!)
Started following you on the day my BHG arrived. What a beautiful spread! I cannot wait to try the recipes. I have to eat gluten and lactose free so your recipes are spot on for me. Best wishes on a complete recovery from your foot injury. It seems that should be a Nike endorsement in here somewhere!
Thank you so much Yogamom!! I love that you like these kind of recipes- I really hope that I can help!

So sorry about your foot…just enjoy resting and maybe even read some books.
Absolutely LOVE the drool worthy links….keep them coming.
Thanks Heather!!
Oh my, this post reads like the agony and the ecstasy. Congrats on the BHG and the Style Maker things. You are already in the big time but this just puts it over the top. So sorry about your foot injury. I am always barefoot in the kitchen and have a deadly fear of a knife falling and impaling me to the spot so I am always aware and super careful, but that’s why they call them accidents, And I’m one waiting to happen. It would do me no good to wear shoes because I live in California and I don’t own any shoes that aren’t sandals. I’ve haven’t owned actual shoes in 18 years. Hope you get better and quit hurting soon. I’m sure the knee walker will help. Your blog and David Lebovitz are the first two I look for every morning.
I trashed my MCL late June … crutches totally bite and yes when you hurt you totally crave sweets!
Congrats on BHG!
holy buckets!!! so much excitement, heather!!!! i’ve got to get my hands on the latest BHG 🙂
thank you so much for the link love and i hope you had a wonderful weekend!!!!!! xoxoxo
Congratulations on being named a STYLEMAKER and for the BHG spread! You’ve done so well for yourself!!! I love your blog. I actually found this after I had watched you on Cutthroat Kitchen! I’m sorry to hear about your toe…I never even thought about something like this happening! I live in CA and am always barefoot in the kitchen so I think I need to change that! The knee scooter is wonderful. My husband had a major foot reconstruction the middle of April and because of problems, has to have surgery again, so he’s still using it. This is the ONLY way he can get around the house or outside. Make sure you get a basket for it and a sheepskin pad to put your knee on too. I hope you recover quickly! Take care!
Thank you so much Shirley! I have to admit that I never would have dreamed that could happen either! I am so sorry to hear about your husband- that is terrible. Thank you for the tip on the sheepskin- I have a basket!!
I’m sorry to hear about your big toe! Last July I had an accident at work where a large piece of glass fell on the top of my right foot (opposite my arch). You’re right when you say there’s no padding! I underwent surgery that day where they had to ligate an artery and repair the wound. I was out of commission for a month. During my recovery, I learned that I had no control over my big toe. Multiple tests later, we learned that I had also severed a tendon and experienced irreparable nerve damage. In December, I underwent another surgery to repair the tendon. Recovery took another month (two weeks in a cast) and a few months in physical therapy. Now my toe strength is back to 90% what it was! Rest up and elevate! You’ll be back to normal in no time 🙂
Oh Beth- that just broke my heart! I am so sorry to hear that you went through that. But thank you- I will do EXACTLY what I am supposed to. Are you supposed to regain all of your strength eventually?
