How freaking cute is Chrissy Teigen?
That is really all I was thinking about when I cracked her new book Cravings…
But after I was done flipping through pictures that left me drooling (I’m talking about the ones of her and her hubby John Legend) I went back to the beginning and started reading. I was chuckling. A lot. Sometimes I was cackling (for those that know me in real life- it’s my loud kind of witch-y laugh). Pete was like “what the hell are you reading that is that funny?” and I was like: “a cookbook.” It is that funny by the way.
It’s also consistently witty and rather heartfelt. The headnotes and personal stories read like an indulgent treat. When I was done, I was thinking that she was a lot more than cute (or gorgeous or any other superficial term for how drop dead gorgeous she is) the girl has chops! She can write! She can make me laugh and laugh (I don’t think I laugh enough normally.)
So then we get to the recipes. And let me tell you, I think her game is seriously pretty strong guys.
It is broken down into these chapters:
Breakfast All Day
Soupmaster
Salads (for when you need them)
Noodles and Carbs
Thai Mom
Party Time
Sh*t on Toast
Vegetable Things
(you notice no dessert!? She’s a savory girl…)
I obviously can’t eat all of the recipes in this book because of my food allergies, but there were a surprising amount that I can (and will). I have ear-marked recipes like Pepper’s Spicy Clams and Pasta, Sesame Chicken Noodles and John’s Tuscan Brick Chicken with Charred Lemons that I want to try. But when it was time to cook, I went straight to the Thai Mom section, which I could NOT resist and got cooking.
I had to share this recipe for Jok Moo (a Thai Pork and Rice Porridge) that my family devoured.
I loved that it was so easy to prepare and that the whole family loved it. It is like a Thai version of Chinese Congee that we ate a lot growing up, and it is everything that she promises- savory and cozy- serious comfort food. So here is some great news: Tastebook http://www.tastebook.com/blog/ not only sent me my own copy to check out and cook from, but they are offering up FIVE copies for you guys to win too!!!!! I am so excited! I just love giving you guys fun stuff and this is book definitely fits the bill. Just sign in below and leave a comment below telling me all about the Sh*t you like to eat on toast to enter to win. Good Luck!!
- Thai Pork and Rice Porridge (Jok Moo)
- 1 ½ cups Jasmine rice
- 2 chicken bouillon cubes
- ¾ pound ground pork
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ¼ cup light soy sauce (I used tamari)
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 3 inch piece of ginger peeled and thinly julienned
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves
- 2 scallions, thinly sliced
- Fried Sliced Garlic for garnish
- *If you are uncomfortable using bouillon cubes use 12 cups chicken stock and salt it generously
- Rinse and drain the rice with cold water and then transfer to a soup pot. Add 12 cups of water and the bouillon cubes. Bring to a boil and cook until the rice is soft and broken down into a porridge, about 45 minutes.
- While the porridge is cooking, in a medium bowl, combine the pork, garlic, soy sauce and salt and pepper.
- When the rice is a porridge like consistency, take a pinch of the pork between your fingers and drop it into the pot, repeating for all of the pork mixture. Add the ginger and cook until the pork “dumplings” are cooked through, about 5 minutes. Taste and thin the porridge with water if desired. Season to taste with kosher salt and stir in the scallions and cilantro.
- Divide the porridge between bowls and garnish with fried garlic slices.

I recently had toast with honey butter, strawberries, almonds and a honey drizzle that was amazing. In fact, I could really go for that right about now. Yum!
I have loved peanut butter toast since I was a kid.
I like to eat avocado and eggs on toast, topped with fermented cabbage.
I enjoy eating almond butter with strawberries and bananas on toast.
My favorite thing on toast is PB and Strawberry Jelly.
Avocado, fried egg and tons of hot sauce!
Whipped honey and fruit, current favs are strawberries and bananas.
I’m a plain old butter, jelly, peanut butter girl….
I love to eat sh*t on toast but like your sweet daughter I can’t eat eggs on toast ’cause I’m allergic and I have to make bread myself before I can have toast, ’cause I’m allergic. HaHa. So, when I do have toast I will put anything spreadable on it – hummus, nut butter, avocado, ooh avocado and shrimp made into a paste. Or y’know just plain ole vegan butter because of the whole non-dairy thing.
It looks like there’s at least one thing I can eat out of this wonderful sounding book… JackMoo! Thanks for the giveaway.
my homemade rhubarb jam: )
Looks so comforting!
The looks insanely good!! i like my toast simple, good creamy butter, radishes and good flaky salt.
I love strawberry jam on toast.
either salted butter or peanut butter and strawberry preserves are my favorites!
Avocado is hard to beat. For something sweet, I do peanut butter, banana, honey and cinnamon!
I love my toast with butter, cinnamon and sugar, crushed walnuts and bananas on top! So yummy! Thanks for the giveaway!
I love avocado and eggs on toast with sriracha!
Avocado toast with arugula is the best!
I love butter the most on my toast – but if you are looking for the unusual, peanut butter and miracle whip!
Avo, fried egg that is still slightly runny!
I LOVE baking toast so it’s really crispy and crunchy! My favourite topping is goats cheese with balsamic roasted beets and figs! Yum!
I love reading Chrissy’s blog, and have been pining for this cookbook since she announced it. When I’m in the mood for something sweet I like peanut butter and honey on toast. But I’m also a savory girl so I love avocado, tomatoes, softboiled or fried egg, and salt/pepper/chili. Ahh just discovered your blog via instagram so I’m off too explore after this.
I like so many things on toast, but probably my all-time fave is salted butter, peanut butter, and honey.
Hey! TOAST!! Yum! I eat my homemade goat cheese and pepper jelly on otast and, boy, is it GOOD!!! You should try it!
Love fried eggs over easy with hot sauce and Cajun seasoning.
I love over easy eggs with FlavorGods pizza seasoning on toast! Avocado is yum too! But really… I need more creative ways to eat toast so I would love to read this book! 🙂
Any kind of eggs on toast – but crispy , fried are the best!
Although it’s hard to beat salted creamy peanut butter on whole grain toast, I’m currently loving coconut oil, mashed avocado, sliced mango, fresh lime juice and sea salt on whole grain toast. It’s the perfect combo of sweet and salty.
Thanks to the influence my Aussie friends, I’ve been spreading more and more of Vegemite on my toast before topping off with some avocado and a squeeze of lemon juice. Sometimes I’ll throw on a fried egg to add a little protein.
Almond butter with honey and cinnamon! 🙂
Avocado toast always and forever
This is my favorite breakfast meal! Happy feasting.
peanut butter, bananas, cinnamon, chia seeds! on cinnamon toast!
Butter and lots of it!
I would LOVE to have my own copy of “Cravings”. I used to cook a lot but I have had
a difficult getting motivated lately. Maybe this will be the kick-in-the-butt I have been needing. LOL
I like peanut or almond butter and bananas on toast…you can add honey to make it special. I also like plain ol’ cinnamon toast, which is cinnamon sugar on buttered toast and lastly, I like grilled cheese with swiss and apple slices! Actually, I like just about anything on toast and have singled it out as my food group of choice if I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life (drink of choice would be chocolate milk!)
I made this recipe and LOVED it! I did do some things different, I used dry spices instead of fresh and I incorporated them into the pork as I cooked it. I then poured the meat into the rice and let it cook together for about 30 minutes so that the flavors would merge and flower. IT WAS SO GOOD!!!!!!! I’m going to try and freeze the remainder.
I will definitely be making this! It is definitely right up my alley with my love and adoration for savory.
My toast favorite begins with a heart 12 grain bread toasted pretty dark. Then goes on a layer of fig jam, thin slices of pear, thin slice of melty gouda cheese, thin slice of Cajun chicken and after the cheese is quickly melted you top it all with arugula and either prepared vinaigrette or a little lemon & oil and salt and crushed pepper! Never add that second piece of bread or you cannot enjoy the ingredients to their full glory
It’s 3/4 pound not 3/4 cup
