Hi everyone!
This is a long overdue post that I have been meaning to write to just update you on the craziness of what is going on around here.
So many of you have been emailing and DM’ing to ask why you are no longer receiving my emails in your inbox, and why there has not been any new content for the last couple of months, and to just make sure I am ok (THANK YOU!!!) – so I thought I would just fill you guys in for anyone who is curious or worried (I swear I am ok! Everything is good, just really, really hectic.)
The last year has been a bit of a roller coaster. If you have not seen this somewhere in my posts/IG feed or Instastories in the last 9 months, our little Coco is going to be on a show on the Disney Channel. It’s a new Disney show called Gabby Duran and the Unsittables, and it films outside of Vancouver, British Columbia and you can expect to see it (I think!) in September of 2019. You can be assured I will let you know when I have details of the season starting!
And while this is tremendously exciting for Coco and for our family as we get to see her realize her dreams, there are some realities that are undeniably difficult. The biggest, of course, is that Coco and I have been living away from Pete and Pia the majority of the time since the end of last September.
Our days look roughly like this: Coco films and goes to school on set Monday-Friday, and our days are often long and unpredictable. Sometimes we get picked up at 6:15 for work and sometimes she goes in later and works until midnight. It’s a bit of an adventure every day! You guys would not believe how hard these little kids work, it’s pretty amazing their capacity to adapt and thrive, and I am constantly surprised and impressed by them. We are very, very fortunate in that the cast and crew and Coco’s teacher are some of the greatest people ever, and this truly becomes your second family.
In my time here I have picked up some errr… interesting habits. I’ve become addicted to the app Wordscapes, have become a very heavy coffee drinker, I eat too many Lily’s chocolate chips before bed and have completely stopped exercising (it is going to hurt getting back in the saddle when I get home full time!) I have been cooking very little since we eat on set most of the time (The catering team is AMAZING accommodating about cooking for food allergies, and I can’t believe how many other people have dietary restrictions!) I tend to eat really healthfully 90% of the time here and then I will have long afternoon and just go off the rails and eat handfuls of gummy candy at the Craft Services table (which is a constant battle to stay away from!) Coco and I also do jigsaw puzzles and watch quite a few weird Australian shows on Netflix and try to copy their accents- we are real party animals. I feel I have to mention that it’s genuinely freezing all the time, because it seems to be such a big part of my life, lol! I mostly wear wool sweaters, hat and gloves and scarf, multiple coats and snow or rain boots with wool socks every single day- In fact, all of my glamour has basically gone out the window. I even recently chopped off all of my hair into a short bob to keep things easier (although I am loving the change too.)
We drive home to Seattle (120 miles) most Friday evenings (or late nights) and then stay at home in Seattle until Sunday afternoon. Then, like clockwork, we head back to Canada and do laundry and grocery shop and generally try to prepare for the week.
Pia comes up whenever she can get a few days away from school and sometimes my parents swap out with me. My mother in law and my sister have both done stints too, so that I could spend time with Pia or go on work trips. Essentially, it truly takes a village and we are really cashing in on any offered help from our tribe at this point!
Ha! If that was not enough for you, I still have a very fulltime job outside of this blog that I will be excited to share with you soon. It’s something that Pete and I with a team have been working on for the last 2 years, and we are almost ready to share it with the world. It’s big. It’s a labor of love, and we can’t wait to show the world.
So, I guess, this rambling description of what things look like right now boils down to the fact that I just have not had time to create new content! I know that I have not taken a break from here in the entire 13 years this blog has existed, but I am hoping you guys will understand- with the precious little time I have that is not spent at work (mine or Coco’s) I need to spend the time with my family. But with just a few weeks left, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and I will tell you that I very much look forward to getting back in the kitchen and doing what I love, which is cooking, baking and creating special one-of-a-kind content just for you guys!
If you will be so kind as to be patient with me for just a few weeks longer, things should get back to some kind of normal around here very shortly! In fact, I have a few new recipes for you I am working on!
I also have some new features coming to the web site any day- like a highly functioning recipe search index that actually works (YAYYY!!!!)

Thanks Steff!
Loving the new hair cut! Congrats on everything. Hope you will be able to get some well deserved down time soon. Looking forward to the future. BTW those Lily chips and her chocolate bars are addicting! So, so good!
Hi Debbie! Thank you so much! It’s a definitely liberating to have chopped it all off! I don’t know about down time, but I will settle for less driving and sleeping in my Seattle bed for sure! And yes, Lilys chips are totally addictive…
Heather, love the hair! I’m only sensitive to gluten but have recently started Keto and feel so much better. Would love to see carb calculations for your fabulous recipes. Congrats to you and your family.
Ruth Larsen
Hi Ruth! I have done Keto off and on the last year and really, really love how it makes me feel, so I would love to further investigate this. Thank you so much!
Glad to hear that everything is ok, hectic, but ok. Love your new look.
Thank you Nancy!!
Lifestyle and beauty content. And garden and orchard tour and tips for what you grow and how you care for your gardens. You are amazing and inspiring. Thank you.
Thank you SO much Kristina!! I looooove beauty content and can’t wait to beef up my garden this year when we are actually home 🙂
More lifestyle content? Fashion? Beauty routines?
Q and A’s, Favorite Lists, Cocktails?
These stuck out to me 😉 although I love the food content, the switch up to this is super interesting and fun- not to mention, I am dying to know what products you love.
Awesome Gretchen! I love this stuff and can’t wait to start adding it in!
More salads for dinner! (that are not shellfish/seafood)…. My husband and I LOVE your salads and make the South West Ceasar from ages ago at least once a month and the warm strawberry bacon salad is once a week during peak strawberry season!
Thank you Amanda! I love salad for dinner too and Spring is the perfect time to make it happen!
Thank you for the update–how exciting (and exhausting!) for all of you! I would love more plant based Keto and also your favorites list! Also, grain free baked recipes without almond flour… Hope you can come up for air soon! X Cheers!
Thank you Gretchen! I am so excited to experiment with more plant-based keto recipes, I think about that all the time and the meat fatigue when I eat low-carb. Thank you so much, I will be getting back to normal very soon!!
I second this- as a vegetarian T1 diabetic would love to see more play based low carb recipes! Thanks!
Hi Gretchen! thank you- could you tell me more what a “play based” low crab recipe is? I would love to help!
Heather,
So glad things are going well with you. Thanks for letting us know.
I appreciate getting recipes that are lower carb, lower sugar and healthy. I would like to start substituting Stevia for sugar in some recipes and need help with that, especially in baking.
Good luck on all your endeavors.
Great Tulsi! Thank you so much for the input!
Heather,
Glad to hear everything is going well with you. Thanks for letting us know. i can’t wait to start getting more new recipes from you.
I am interested in trying to substitute Stevia for sugar, especially in baking. We are trying to lower our sugar consumption but still crave a goodie now and then.
I’d love to see more really easy recipes that kids love.
Both my girls are lactose intolerant, and I love to cook,
but my life’s been so busy at the moment that I simply don’t have enough time to make complex recipes.
I don’t have allergies, so I especiallly love the lifestyle and party pieces!
Heather,
Thank you for sharing your crazy, hectic, wonderful experiences this past year. Sounds like a whirlwind! Since you’re taking suggestions, I would love to be able to make a gluten free/vegan olive oil cake. I’ve never made one of your recipes and not liked it! Your book is a game changer. Thanks for all the hard work you do.
Awesome Ashley! Thank you, I have been thinking about this for a while, so I am glad you suggested it!
How Very exciting! I have enjoyed your posts, as well as your recipes…..but, I completely understand when it comes to being present first with family
Keto, please! Congratulations on all the exciting developments in your life!
Heather. So excited about this update. Thrilled for Coco and can’t wait to see her show. Love your hair. I just cut mine too. My husband has been Whole Foods plant based for almost 2 years. I just started this year in mid January. I’d love to see more recipes around Whole Foods plant based. We work so simple dinners or lunches that are good to pack for work commuting into NY. Thanks and looking forward to all you’re new recipes!!!
Thank you so much Jennifer! the short haircut is the most liberating thing! check, check on vegan recipes!!!
Congrats on all the exciting things happening in your life!! I love your cookbook… we cook at least a couple meals from it a week. A cookbook or recipe index I would love to see from you would be cooking by season. Thanks for considering!
Thank you for your feedback Julie!!
Hi again! I forgot to ask… a lot of your recipes call for cooked shredded chicken. What’s your favorite method for cooking chicken to be used in recipes?
Thanks!
Hi Julie! I like to just roast a whole chicken with olive oil, salt and pepper at 375 for an hour- but I totally get that people are really busy too, so when I am in that situation, I like to just pick up an organic roast chicken at the grocery store and shred that to use!
