8 years ago when we moved into this house we planted 5 column apple trees. The first few years weren’t too active, but in the last two years we get quite a nice crop of apples. We eat them like crazy, but we still wind up with too many dropping all at once and there is only one thing to do with them- make applesauce!!

Homemade Cinnamon ApplesauceLast week, I made the girls go pick up all of the apples every day after school and we have been saving them up in the refrigerator so that I could make this sauce. Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce

My mom used to make applesauce when I was little and I also remember making it at school with my teachers when I was really little- one of my first lessons in cooking! Overall it’s a nostalgic dish that is as easy and simple as it is delicious.

Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce

I love to make a big batch and eat it on its own, or heat it up and eat it with (vegan) vanilla ice cream- Soooooo good. It’s basically the filling of an apple crisp. Enjoy!

Recipe: Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce

Ingredients

  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • 6 pounds apples (I used Gala), peeled, cored and quartered
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • generous pinch of kosher salt

Instructions

  1. In a large pot over medium heat, melt the coconut oil.
  2. Add the apples and sprinkle them with a pinch of kosher salt. Stir the apples with the melted coconut oil. Add a lid and turn the heat to low. Let the apples simmer for 20 minutes until very soft. Add the lemon juice and the cinnamon and mix well.
  3. Use a potato masher or a big spoon to smash the apples into a chunky sauce (or less chunky if you prefer.)
  4. Serve the applesauce hot or cool, store in the refrigerator.

Preparation time: 20 minute(s)

Cooking time: 50 minute(s)
