Oh wow. It’s hard to know what to say about this stuff.
Let me think about it. Addictive. Drool. Freaking out. Getinmybelly.
These are words that come to mind.
This insanely delicious snack crack came about because Pia was sniffling a bit about how she wishes that she could still have puppy chow (as in the chex cereal mix rolled in peanut butter and milk chocolate and rolled in powdered sugar. My niece used to make it for her and it was her favorite thing EVER. Well since we now know she is allergic to cane sugar, dairy and peanut butter (among a million other things)- this appeared to be emphatically out.
But as Pia got that sad, wistful look to her cute as a button little allergic face, I realized that we could probably recreate Puppy Chow- but better.
We used popcorn and crunchy slivered almonds instead of cereal, and I melted almond butter and dark vegan chocolate to coat the popcorn and almonds. Then we tossed it all in Beet powdered sugar and a generous pinch of kosher salt. The result? Ooooohhhhh yeaaaaahhhhhhh……
Whether you want to serve it up at your superbowl party this weekend or make this for your little munchkins (or just to shovel into your own mouth!) for Valentines Day- just do it.
*** Just in case there is any confusion ( I have received some emails) this IS NOT for your dogs and or puppies. Puppy Chow is just a nick name for this type of snack. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs.
- 8 cups popped popcorn
- 1 cup slivered almonds
- ½ cup almond butter
- ⅔ cup chocolate chips (vegan)
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 2 cups powdered sugar (I used beet sugar)
- ¼ teaspoon of kosher salt
- Microwave the almond butter, chocolate chips and vanilla together for about 60 seconds. Whisk together until melted and smooth.
- While the mixture is in the microwave, place the powdered sugar and a ¼ teaspoon of kosher salt in a large gallon sized Ziploc bag, and combine the popcorn and the almonds in a large mixing bowl.
- When the peanut butter chocolate mixture is finished add it to the popcorn and almonds. You will think that the chocolate will never properly coat the popcorn but keep gently folding it together and it will.
- Next transfer the gooey chocolate covered popcorn into the Ziploc with the powdered sugar. Reseal the bag and shake the popcorn until all of the chocolate covered popcorn is completely coated. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for up to a week (it will never last that long!)

Ill take a bowl right now!
I can see how this is so addictive!!
I’m definitely not allowed to make this because it’s SO addictive I would eat it all in a flash! I’m also pretty sure you’re mom of the year for figuring out a way Pia could still eat puppy chow!!
Step three peanut butter> almond butter right? sorry I’m a little dense what are those red dot things? Thanks for the help.
YES moe!! thank you! I fixed that! Sprinkles!
I don’t know if my kids would even get a chance to eat this, I’d probably finish all off myself in a flurry of chocolate and powdered sugar.
